To the VhaVenda the lake is more than just a natural water body, as it forms a rich heritage of folklore, myths and ceremonial rituals.  The lake is the only true inland lake in South Africa.  The lake is unique not only in South Africa but also on the African continent because it was formed by a landslide some 10 000 years ago.
