| Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela is one of South Africa’s greatest leaders, an international symbol for peace and democracy. Mvezo is his birthplace. The remains of the Mandela homestead are where Mandela resided with his mother and siblings for the first year of his life and therefore form a focal point of this association. This homestead now comprises the remains of six huts. Although there are no obvious identifiable features to distinguish these remains from those of any of the other homesteads in the historical settlement of Mvezo, knowledge of these remains as being those of the Mandela family have been passed down from generation to generation and forms part of the local oral history. |
