INFORMATION SYSTEMS
ARCHIVES
The South African Heritage Resources Agency (SAHRA)
is tasked in terms of the National Heritage Resources Act (No. 25 of 1999) to
establish and maintain an inventory of the national estate, which in fact is the management of a
comprehensive and well-oiled information network. Part of this network is the Archives in the SAHRA Registry
Section, which forms part of the organisation’s Information Services Division.
The Archives contain existing heritage conservation
records generated by SAHRA and its predecessors. This includes information of
all heritage sites and any other places and objects with which SAHRA and its
predecessors have been involved. More specifically it contains information on sites and objects protected
through the publication of notices in the Government Gazette or Provincial
Gazette, whether in terms of the National Heritage Resources Act or legislation
relevant to SAHRA’s predecessors, or provincial legislation.
Access To The Public
: SAHRA is committed to service community information
needs with regard to access to heritage conservation records, provided that the
information may be withheld if its disclosure may impact negatively on the
privacy or economical interests of the owner or any person with an interest in
a property, or a potential investor, or on the continued conservation of a
heritage resource.
Staff :
Registry staff members are responsible for management
of the Archives. Those staff members are
Mr Peter Farmer (Archivist), Mr Benedict Rodgers and
Mr. Ashley van Dieman
(both senior Registry Clerks).
