TRANSFER OF HUMAN REMAINS PRESTWICH STREET – WOODSTOCK HOSPITAL

-Xhosa- -Afrikaans-

Human remains were uncovered in Prestwich Street while preparing for a housing development in May 2003. Currently, these remains are stored in Napier House adjacent to the place where they were found.

Napier house is not an adequate accommodation for this purpose and alternative accommodation has been secured at the Woodstock Day Hospital. The former mortuary of the hospital is more appropriate and dignified.

The place and time of burial of these remains has not yet been decided upon.

A ceremonial transfer is being organised. The remains will be carried through the centre of Cape Town, the mother city of these ancestral remains, who it is believed are remains of the downtrodden, Khoisan, slaves, labourers and members of the poor communities.

It is also believed that these are remains of people who were not afforded respect and dignity, in life and in death.

A procession from Prestwich to Woodstock is planned to take place

  • On 21 April 2004
  • At 12H00 to 14H00

The event is organised by the Mayor of Cape Town with the supported by the South African Heritage Resources Agency (SAHRA) and the Prestwich Place Project Committee (PPPC).

You are called upon to join us as the people of South Africa mourn and commemorate the toil of their ancestors and acknowledge their lives as part of our heritage and the heritage of generations to come.
