ProposalDescription:

As yet, at Kromdraai (despite the presence of well preserved flowstones stratigraphically located between Members 3 and 2, as well as between Members 2 and 1), no Uranium-Lead (U/Pb) dates have been combined with the available faunal correlations and/or paleomagnetic data. It is now well-established that the U/Pb dating technique, applied to calcium carbonate cave rocks (flowstones or speleothems), can provide accurate and precise ages from the South African sites. This is the main aim of this project: obtaining the first U/Pb dates for the 2 distinct interfaces (see above) at the Kromdraai site.

Expanded_Motivation:

The dates will be obtained using multicollector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry MC-ICPMS techniques from thin, U-rich (on average 0.4 parts per million) layers within each of the 6 samples of flowstones that have been kept as small as possible for the best possible preservation of the speleothems that are still in situ.
