TO DECLARE GIFTS BESTOWED TO NELSON MANDELA

NOTIFICATION OF PROPOSED DECLARATION OF THE COLLECTION OF GIFTS BESTOWED ON NELSON MANDELA AS A SPECIFICALLY DECLARED HERITAGE COLLECTION (Section 32 of the National Heritage Resources Act no 25 of 1999)

The collection comprises approximately 3,900 verified objects, including beadwork, textiles, sculptures, portraits, medals, orders, paintings, brass artefacts, leather and gold items, handcrafted postcards, newspaper articles and children’s drawings. Together, these objects reflect the breadth of Mandela’s influence across cultures, nations and generations. Diplomatic gifts from heads of state sit alongside handmade cards from children; ceremonial objects coexist with everyday items that speak to Mandela’s humanity, humility and connection to ordinary people.

This collection is more than an assemblage of gifted objects. It is a material record of South Africa’s re-entry into the global community, of international solidarity with the anti-apartheid struggle, and of the symbolic role Mandela came to occupy as a moral leader in the world. The gifts transcend language, race and borders, bearing witness to a moment in history when South Africa’s democratic transition carried global significance.

The collection continues to serve an educational and social purpose, supporting learning, research and public engagement with South Africa’s history.

THE GRAVE OF SOLOMON POPOLI LINDA

By virtue of the powers vested in the South African Heritage Resources Agency, in terms of section 27 (5) of the National Heritage Resources Act (No. 25 of 1999) SAHRA hereby declares the grave of Solomon Popoli Linda; grave number 4875, located at the Doornkop  Cemetery, Soweto, Johannesburg, Gauteng Province as National Heritage Site.

SOLOMON POPOLI LINDA

NOTIFICATION OF THE INTENTION TO DECLARE THE GRAVE OF SOLOMON POPOLI LINDA; GRAVE NUMBER 4875, LOCATED AT THE DOORNKOP CEMETERY, ZOLA TOWNSHIP, JOHANNESBURG, GAUTENG PROVINCE AS A NATIONAL HERITAGE SITES (Section 27 of the National Heritage Resources Act no 25 of 1999).

The grave of Solomon Linda is of pivotal cultural significance to South Africa as it encapsulates the broader impact of colonialism, particularly its theft and exploitation of African people’s cultural heritage without recognition. Linda, a music artist whose rendition of the Imbube in the 1930s went to become a great ‘hit’ in South Africa and in other parts of the world, particularly in the United States of America. Despite Linda’s success in South Africa, the socio-political context of the 1930s granted Africans menial rights; thus, depriving them of economic benefit from their talents. As notes, “Black South Africans had no legal rights in the 1930s and while alive Solomon Linda was not aware of what royalties were…” This forced Linda to sell rights for his song for 10 shillings leaving him destitute to the time of his death in 1960. Furthermore, neither did he nor his descendants receive royalties for his creative work despite the reworking and popularisation of his work. In fact, others claimed royalties while refusing to acknowledge Linda’s role. As Peter Alegi & Chris Bolsmann have noted in their book, Africa’s World Cup: Critical Reflections on Play, Patriotism, Spectatorship, and Space, “The most memorable example of the theft of intellectual rights of an African artist is that of Solomon Linda who in 1939 wrote the song Mbube and received 10 shillings (less than $2) for his efforts.

By virtue of the powers vested in the South African Heritage Resources Agency, in terms of section 27 (5) of the National Heritage Resources Act (No. 25 of 1999), SAHRA hereby declares the Boomplaats Rock Engraving Site Complex situated on Farms Boomplaats 24 JT & Boomplaats 29 JT; Lydenburg, Mpumalanga as a National Heritage Site.

NOTIFICATION OF THE INTENTION TO DECLARE THE WINNIE MADIKIZELA-MANDELA HOUSE; ERF 802 & 803 MAJWEMASWEU; BRANDFORT, FREE STATE AS A NATIONAL HERITAGE SITE IN TERMS OF SECTION 27 OF THE NATIONAL HERITAGE RESOURCES ACT NO. 25 OF 1999.

By virtue of the powers vested in the South African Heritage Resources Agency (SAHRA) in terms of section 27 of the National Heritage Resources Act No, 25 of 1999 (“the NHRA”), SAHRA hereby notifies all stakeholders of the declaration of the Winnie Madikizela-Mandela House; Erf 802 & 803 Majwemasweu; Brandfort, Free State as a National Heritage Site in line with the provisions of section 27(1) of the National Heritage Resources Act No 25 of 1999 (referred to henceforth as “NHRA”).
