The South African Heritage Resources Act prescribes that a Council should oversee the activities of SAHRA.
As the activities of the South African Heritage Resources Agency are of such an extremely divergent and inter-disciplinary nature, the Council consists of experts from disciplines such as architecture, history, town and regional planning, anthropology, archaeology, palaeontology, indigenous knowledge systems and geology. People with legal training, management and financial knowledge are also appointed for the efficient functioning of the South African Heritage Resources Agency.
Below are the members of the SAHRA Council (updated October 2016)
Prof Susan Bouillon
Professor Bouillon is the founder and the Executive Head of Delacon Group, the Chairperson of SAHRA Council, the Chairperson of Gauteng PHRA and Extraordinary Professor in Law at the University of North West (Potchefstroom) and University of Pretoria where she lectures Planning law and Municipal law.
Dr Philip Mthobeli Guma
Dr Guma is the founder and a Director of Sinakho Leadership Support and Skills Development Centre/ Academy. He is a Ministerial appointee to the SAHRA Council. Dr Guma holds PhD in Medical Anthropology from the University of Carolina at Chapel Hill, USA.
Prof Ncedile Saule
Professor Saule is a Professor and a Head of Department of Language and Literature at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University. He is a representative of the Eastern Cape PHRA as well as SAHRA Council member.
Prof Henry Charles Bredekamp
Professor Bredekamp is a retired Professor and Director of the University of the Western Cape’s Institute for Historical Research, a former Chief Executive Officer of Iziko Museums of South Africa and Interim CEO of Robben Island. He is a Ministerial appointee to the SAHRA Council, serving a second term.
Mr Mohlomi Ezekiel Masooa
Mr Masooa holds a Master’s Degree in History. He is a representative of the Free State PHRA as well as SAHRA Council member.
Dr Gregory Houston
Dr Houston holds PhD from the University of Natal. He is a Chief Research Specialist at the Human Sciences Research Council, research fellow of the History department of the University of Free State and a Ministerial appointee who is serving his second term in the SAHRA Council.
Mr Moses Themba Makhweyane
Mr Makhweyane holds a Baccalaureus Iuris (BIuris) Degree. He is a Corporate Governance Practitioner and a Professional Consultant. Mr Makhweyane is a Deputy Chairperson of the Mpumalanga Heritage Resources Authority (MHRA), a Council member for the Mpumalanga Community Education and Training College as well as a SAHRA Council member.
Ms Thembeka Semane
Ms Semane is a Business Professional who holds a Post Graduate Diploma in Business Administration (PDBA) from the University of Pretoria`s Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS), Bcom- Accounting and is a qualified Banker with CAIB(SA) from the Institute of Bankers South Africa. She is a Ministerial appointee to the SAHRA Council
Ras Mpho Jeffrey Molapisi
Ras Molapisi is a Deputy Director: Museums and Heritage. He holds Anthropology Honours Degree from Rhodes University. Ras Molapisi is a representative of North West PHRA and a SAHRA Council member.
Mr Khathutshelo Donald Lithole
Mr Lithole holds Master’s Degree in Development Studies from the University of Limpopo. He is a Manager: Heritage and Museums. Mr Lithole is a Limpopo PHRA representative who is serving a second term in the SAHRA Council.
Mr Jonathan Sharfman
Mr Sharfman is completing his PhD at Leiden University. He is a Maritime Archaeologist and a Director of African Centre for Heritage Activities. He is a Ministerial appointee to the SAHRA Council.
Ms Reyhana Gani
Ms Gani is a Chartered Accountant registered with the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants. She is a Ministerial appointee who is serving a second term in the SAHRA Council where she was a Chair of the Audit & Risk Committee and a member of the HR & Remuneration Committee. She works as an independent Consultant in the Accounting, Taxation and Auditing space, with over 10 years experience. Currently she is the Chairperson of the Audit & Risk Committee of Stellenbosch Municipality as well as a member of the Cape Winelands District Municipality and West Coast District Municipality.
