MORE ON THE
STUDENT HERITAGE WORKSHOP
The South African Heritage Resources Agency (SAHRA), through its Burial Grounds and Graves (BGG) Unit, in partnership with the Palaeo-Research Institute (PRI) and the Southern African Archaeology Student Society (SAASS), invites students, researchers, and emerging heritage practitioners to participate in the SAHRA Student Heritage Workshop on 22 September 2026 at the Wole Soyinka Auditorium, University of Johannesburg, Bunting Road Campus. Hosted under the theme“From Thesis to Policy: Bridging the Gap Between Academia and National Heritage Mandate,” the workshop aims to introduce students to SAHRA’s mandate, the management of South Africa’s heritage resources, and the diverse work undertaken by its specialist business units. Participants will engage with experts from the Burial Grounds and Graves (BGG) Unit, Development Applications Unit (DAU), National Inventory Unit (NIU), Archaeology, Palaeontology and Maritime Unit (APM), and the Repatriation and Restitution Office (RRO), gaining insight into how heritage legislation, research, conservation, permitting, and digital heritage management are applied in practice.
