NAMIBIA REPATRIATION PROJECT

The Government of South Africa, through the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture (DSAC), will host a historic repatriation send-off and handover ceremony on 19 August 2026 at Iziko Museums in the Western Cape. This profound occasion will honour the return of ancestral remains currently held at Iziko Museums, marking an important step in restoring dignity, identity, and belonging to communities whose ancestors were separated from their homeland for generations.

The ceremony will also include the formal handover of the exhumed mortal remains of two Namibian former political prisoners who were incarcerated on Robben Island during the apartheid era and were subsequently laid to rest in Gugulethu Cemetery and Maitland Cemetery. Their return represents not only the reunification of loved ones with their ancestral lands, but also a powerful act of remembrance and recognition of the sacrifices made in the struggle against oppression and injustice.

Led by the Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Mr Gayton McKenzie, the ceremony stands as a significant milestone in the enduring partnership between South Africa and Namibia. It is a moment of reflection, healing, and restoration that acknowledges the painful legacies of colonialism and apartheid while reaffirming a shared commitment to truth, justice, and reconciliation.

More than a ceremonial occasion, the handover serves as a deeply symbolic gesture of respect for the descendants and Indigenous communities affected by historical displacement.
