NOTIFICATION OF INTENTION

TO DECLARE GROOT CONSTANTIA WINE ESTATE

NOTIFICATION OF PROPOSED DECLARATION OF THE GROOT CONSTANTIA WINE ESTATE; CONSTANTIA; CAPE TOWN; WESTERN CAPE AS A NATIONAL HERITAGE SITE (Section 27 of the National Heritage Resources Act, No. 25 of 1999)

“Groot Constantia Estate is a fine example of Cape Dutch architecture and vernacular placemaking. Established in 1685 under Governor Simon van der Stel and built through the labour and craftsmanship of enslaved peoples, whose contributions were fundamental to its success. The estate exemplifies early global trade, agrarian practices, and winemaking in the Cape, while its design reflects careful consideration of geography, geology, and climate. Its grandeur, elegant farmstead layout, and surrounding landscape vistas create a distinctive sense of place. Collectively, these qualities make Groot Constantia a site of profound historical, cultural, and architectural significance.
