MORE ON THE
LESOTHO REPATRIATION
As part of ongoing efforts to facilitate the repatriation of human remains linked to South Africa’s liberation history, SAHRA’s Media Team accompanied the technical delegation to Lesotho to document preparatory work for future exhumations and repatriation processes. The visit focused on supporting and recording DNA sampling and testing activities undertaken to assist in the verification and identification of human remains. Through in-depth interviews with survivors of historical raids, academics, community members, and political leaders, the team captured powerful personal narratives and valuable historical perspectives that provide deeper insight into the experiences of those affected by displacement and conflict. This documentation not only preserves important historical testimony but also strengthens public understanding of the human stories behind repatriation efforts, highlighting the importance of regional cooperation, historical truth-telling, remembrance, and restorative justice in addressing the legacy of the liberation struggle.
