CALLING ON
THE PUBLIC TO NOMINATE individuals, communities, groups, and companies play in the management of heritage, whether tangible and/or intangible, movable or immovable.
Year 2023 is the most remarkable milestone for the NHC. It marks a decade of the successful implementation of the Heritage Awards in partnership with various provincial departments and local authorities. The Golden Shield National Heritage Awards (Gosha), as hosted by the National Heritage Council, were conceived in 2007 and came into implementation only in 2012. This was due to the intensive study of the environment which was through seminars, conferences and observations made, realising that there was a gap in the nation building and transformation space for a platform where the South African public could celebrate and cherish their heritage while being recognised for such.
In this manner, the NHC shows gratitude and takes pride in people who continuously contribute selflessly to the preservation, interpretation and promotion of South Africa’s rich cultural heritage.
The awards were motivated by the rationale that heritage plays a significant role in promoting social cohesion and community development. Awards such as these, therefore, give acknowledgement and expose the depth of the South African Heritage which is unique and diverse. This project takes a national character and is intended to be all-inclusive.
