NOTIFICATION OF INTENTION

TO DECLARE GROOT CONSTANTIA WINE ESTATE

NOTIFICATION OF PROPOSED DECLARATION OF THE GROOT CONSTANTIA WINE ESTATE; CONSTANTIA; CAPE TOWN; WESTERN CAPE AS A NATIONAL HERITAGE SITE (Section 27 of the National Heritage Resources Act, No. 25 of 1999)

“Groot Constantia Wine Estate, situated in the historic Constantia-Tokai Valley in Cape Town, is one of South Africa’s oldest and most important cultural landscapes. Established in 1685 by Simon van der Stel, Governor of the Cape of Good Hope under the Dutch East India Company, it is recognised as South Africa’s first wine estate and remains a significant example of the country’s early winemaking history. The estate is closely associated with the development of viticulture at the Cape, the history of the VOC period, and the use of enslaved labour, whose skills and labour contributed to the establishment, buildings, and prosperity of the estate. Its Cape Dutch Manor House, Cloete Cellar, historic farmstead layout, and surrounding landscape demonstrate exceptional architectural, aesthetic, agricultural, and cultural value.

For more than three centuries, Groot Constantia has remained a working wine estate of national and international renown. Its wines have been recognised beyond South Africa, and the estate is referenced in historical and literary records. Its historical association with the origins of South African wine production, its Cape Dutch architecture, its connection to the history of slavery and labour at the Cape, and its continued role as a living cultural landscape make it an irreplaceable heritage resource.”
The South African Heritage Resources Agency identified the site as having qualities so exceptional that it is of special national significance and warrants the declaration as a National Heritage Site.
