NOTIFICATION OF PROPOSED DECLARATION OF THE GRAVE OF CHIEF CHUNGWA OF AMAGQUNUKHWEBE; ALEXANDRIA; EASTERN CAPE AS A NATIONAL HERITAGE SITE (Section 27 of the National Heritage Resources Act, No. 25 of 1999)
Nkosi (Chief) Chungwa kaTshaka (c. 1750-1812) is one of the greatest unsung and unacknowledged military heroes of the Frontier Wars1 (1779 – 1879). Chief Chungwa was born around 1698 in the Zuurveld area (this would become the area of the greatest contestation between amaXhosa and European colonists) and is today characterized by the Sundays River Valley, Ndlambe, and Makana Local Municipalities. He defined his land of birth as the “…tract of country [that] was life to the Gqunukhwebe nation and that if they were deprived of it, they would lose their life”. He thus used this as an inspiration to relentlessly fight against colonial domination to keep his authority over the land of his birth. History shows that Chief Chungwa and other African leaders not only resisted the colonial onslaught, but they also fought the colonial domination that was interfering with their ownership of land, the applicable natural resources, and their political authority.

The South African Heritage Resources Agency (SAHRA) intends to declare the grave of Chief Chungwa of AmaQqunukhwebe in Alexandria, Eastern Cape as a National Heritage Site in line with the provisions of section 27(1) of the National Heritage Resources Act No 25 of 1999 (referred to henceforth as “NHRA”)
