MORE ON
ARAB PRIEST
One of South Africa’s most celebrated paintings is coming home. Irma Stern’s The Arab Priest (1945), a masterwork born of her transformative travels to Zanzibar returns to South Africa for a landmark exhibition that invites fresh conversation about art, heritage, identity, and restitution.
In 2011, the painting became the most expensive South African work sold at auction when it was acquired by Qatar Museums Authority (QMA). SAHRA refused its permanent export, ruling instead that it formed part of the national estate, a landmark decision under the National Heritage Resources Act. Under a unique 20-year loan agreement, the work returns to South Africa every five years.
This visit, hosted by the University of Pretoria Museums and the Iziko South African National Gallery, offers a rare opportunity to engage with questions of nationhood, belonging, memory, and the politics of cultural return. Themes that feel more urgent than ever.
