Details of the Seminar

Format: Hybrid (Virtual and In-Person)

Date: Wednesday, 22  July 2026

Time: 10:00 – 15:30

Venue: Freedom Park, Salvokop, Corner Koch and 7th Avenue, Pretoria, Gauteng

As the national authority responsible for the protection and management of heritage resources, SAHRA regularly receives requests relating to the relocation of graves located outside formal cemeteries. Through stakeholder engagements and consultations with funeral undertaker associations, several challenges have been identified regarding legislative compliance, permitting requirements, heritage protection responsibilities, and the management of graves affected by development activities. This seminar will provide a platform for engagement between SAHRA and the funeral industry, while promoting greater understanding of the National Heritage Resources Act and the responsibilities of practitioners involved in grave relocation processes.

Outcomes

The outcomes of the seminar will contribute towards improved compliance, strengthened stakeholder relationships, and the development of practical guidance material for the funeral industry and associated stakeholders.
