MORE ON THE
RESTITUTION PROJECT
The Burial Grounds and Graves Unit (BGG) within the South African Heritage Resources Agency (SAHRA) is charged with the responsibility of conserving graves that do not trigger Section 38 of the National Heritage Resources Act 25 (1999) (NHRA). Owing to requests for assistance from SAHRA by funeral undertakers seeking to relocate graves that fall outside formal cemeteries, and ongoing challenges and compliance gaps observed in the management, relocation, and protection of graves under the NHRA, it became imperative that an engagement session is organised.
Engagements with funeral undertaker associations have confirmed a clear need for improved guidance, awareness, and alignment between regulatory requirements and practices in the field. This seminar aims to provide practical guidance on compliance requirements, promote good burial practices, and improve understanding of permitting processes, while strengthening collaboration between SAHRA and funeral undertakers.
Outcomes
The intended outcomes include improved compliance with NHRA requirements, enhanced stakeholder engagement, and better alignment between field practices and legislative frameworks. The seminar will also culminate in the development of a guidance document to be shared with stakeholders for use in the field.
